Spinal Adjustments
Chiropractic techniques used in the office include: CBP, Diversified, Thompson, Activator and other instrument. These techniques allow a wide variability in the types of adjustments.
What are Adjustments?
Adjustments are specifically targeted pressure applied to your body by your Chiropractor. The areas adjusted are misalign joints in your spine causing malfunction of the nerve in that area. You might feel a quick thrust. At other times you might experience a constant pressure, building gently over a few moments. Several areas may be adjusted, or your Chiropractor may determine that an isolated section of your spine needs to have special focus.
Some Chiropractors have special tables to manipulate you to get your spine in exactly the right position for your adjustment. The key to all adjustments is to use the precise amount of pressure on the exact spot, at the correct time to get the vertebrae realigned and moving properly again. Your Chiropractor has received specialized training to pinpoint the best type of adjustment to be applied to the exact area of your spine for optimal results.
An adjustment is not a specific treatment for any symptom or disease but instead it optimizes the function of your nervous system by restoring better motion and/or alignment to the joints of your spine. Normal movement of the spinal joints is a prerequisite for normal brain and nervous system function. Your nervous system coordinates every movement that you do and controls every organ/gland/cell in your body. Therefore, a Chiropractic adjustment allows your body to function at its best and thus allow it the opportunity to heal.
After receiving an adjustment, many patients report experiencing a calming effect. Others might feel an increase in mobility. If your results differ following your adjustment, your chiropractor will have insight into how you feel. The positive benefits may arise as you continue your Chiropractic care.
What is that Sound?
During adjustment, you might hear an unusual sound at the site of the applied pressure. Lubricating fluids that separate the bones may produce a sound when the gas and fluids shift. Often, it sound like opening a can of soda. This is a normal part of the adjustment process and hearing or not hearing the sound isn’t a good guide to judge the quality of your treatment.
Who should get Adjustments?
See your local chiropractic to determine whether you’re a candidate for chiropractic treatment. Your chiropractic will do a thorough spinal examination and may include other tests to check for range of motion issues. The tests will provide a picture of your spinal health and help your chiropractor assess your course of treatment. Individuals of all ages benefit from chiropractic care. Newborns, infants, children and adults of all ages benefit from an on-going, natural regimen to ensure optimal health. Your chiropractor will tailor your treatment to your size, age and unique health situation.
Benefits of Continued Care
A misnomer about chiropractic care is that once the pain, discomfort or range of motion issues are corrected, adjustments and chiropractic appointments should end. This is far from the truth! The human body is very adaptable. If something moves out of alignment, your muscles and tenons begin adapting to the change. If you discontinue chiropractic care and go back to your old habits and lifestyle, you may find yourself with a recurrence of the problems that brought you to chiropractic care and the recurring problems may create bigger health challenges. Continued adjustments become more effective in maintaining health alignment over time. For optimal well being and health, consider chiropractic care a regular part of your health lifestyle.

Spinal & Postural Screenings
The spine and back are the core of the musculoskeletal system. When any element of it is thrown out of balance, misalignments and subluxations occur. This can lead to pinched nerves, loss of mobility and a host of other issues.

The spine is also the hub of the central nervous system. Issues of the back and spine invariably lead to related issues of the limbs. Back and spine problems can even cause headaches and other nervous system imbalances. Fortunately, chiropractic care can assist with correcting all of these issues.
Good Posture Central to Musculoskeletal Functioning
Having good posture and form throughout your daily activities is key to having a strong musculoskeletal system. How you carry yourself and move throughout the day has a continual effect on the spine and back.
If there are imbalances in functioning, your system is not optimized and problems can radiate throughout the body. There is extraneous stress on the spine and resultant muscle strain and tension. This taxes the bones unnecessarily and can eventually throw them out of balance. Chronic pain and discomfort can result.
Consequences of Poor Posture
Having poor posture can lead to a range of musculoskeletal issues, including:
- Disc injury
- Vertebral imbalance
- Lifting injuries
- Work injuries
- Overuse injuries
- Sports injuries
- Chronic back pain
- Neck pain
- Limb or joint pain
- Extremity numbness
How Spinal and Posture Screenings Can Help
Spine and posture screenings are professional diagnostic processes that allow for a focused spinal analysis. They bring a range of benefits, including:
- Locate stress points
- Find misalignments
- Target the source of pain
A spinal and posture screening allows these issues to be pinpointed. An informed course of treatment is then possible to assist in resolving issues such as back pain, limb pain, extremity numbness, and headaches.

X-rays
X-Rays
One of the key components of Chiropractic care is diagnostics. Chiropractic radiology serves as a critical tool in this process, aiding in the identification of potential pathologies such as tumors or fractures, as well as guiding spinal adjustments. Chiropractors utilize a variety of diagnostic techniques to gain a comprehensive understanding of a patient’s neuromusculoskeletal system and assess the most effective treatment interventions for achieving optimal results.
Given that Chiropractic care often involves spinal manipulation and other techniques that require the movement of skeletal structures, X-rays provide valuable insight into the alignment and structural integrity of the body.
It is important to note that X-rays are routinely used in Chiropractic care. For the majority of patients, Chiropractors can assess musculoskeletal conditions through physical examinations and confirm their findings using X-ray imaging. X-rays are typically for severe condition, where there may be underlying conditions such as scoliosis, osteoporosis, or spinal stenosis.
In general, X-rays are recommended in the following circumstances:
- Following significant traumatic injury, where fractures or dislocations may be present
- When an infection may be contributing to the patient’s pain
- If there is suspicion of a serious disease, such as cancer or a tumor
- When joint disease, such as arthritis, is suspected to be causing pain
- For patients over the age of 50 who have experienced any form of trauma (even minor)
- For most patients aged 65 and older
- For those diagnosed with or at risk for osteoporosis, to identify or rule out vertebral fractures
- In cases of suspected spinal instability
- For patients experiencing long-standing pain that has not responded to previous treatments
X-rays (or diagnostic images) play a pivotal role in Chiropractic care by enabling Chiropractors to visualize bones, joints, and related soft tissues, with the most clarity being in the bones and joints. When taken in a standing or weight-bearing position, X-rays reveal both normal and abnormal spinal curvatures, as well as joint changes. This allows Chiropractors to evaluate bone health, identify congenital anomalies, fractures, dislocations, arthritis, infections, and tumors, all of which significantly influence the treatment approach.
Historically, X-rays were commonly used for Chiropractic patients; however, advancements in research and education have led to a more selective approach. Chiropractors now rely on a thorough physical examination and the patient’s medical history to determine whether imaging is necessary. While X-rays are often taken in cases of serious trauma or a cancer history, the decision ultimately depends on the clinical assessment.
X-rays are more frequently utilized for older patients, as they are more likely to have conditions such as brittle bone disease, which could alter treatment strategies.
What Patients Want to Know Before an Imaging Exam
Concerns about radiation exposure are common among patients undergoing spinal imaging exams. A study published in Radiology (February 2018) examined what information patients and caregivers prioritize before undergoing imaging procedures and how they prefer to receive it.
The study found that patient care in radiology tends to focus on test results post-exam, but pre-exam communication is equally important. Notably, 22% of participants reported receiving no information prior to their imaging exam.
Types of Spinal Imaging Exams
Different imaging tests are available to diagnose and treat spinal conditions. A common misconception is that all imaging tests involve radiation; however, X-rays, CT scans, and nuclear medicine studies do emit radiation, whereas MRIs and musculoskeletal sonography do not.
Study Findings on Patient Preferences
The research involved a survey of 1,542 patients and caregivers, revealing the following key findings:
- The majority (72%) preferred to receive information from the doctor who ordered the exam, followed by radiology staff (21%).
- Most patients (52%) preferred to receive information about the exam via phone, while 37% preferred in-person discussions.
- Over half (52%) took the initiative to seek information about their exams through direct contact with their provider or online searches.
When it came to the types of information that patients found most valuable, respondents prioritized practical details such as:
- How to prepare for the exam
- The process of the exam itself
- Whether an intravenous (IV) line or drinking contrast material would be necessary
Conversely, less importance was placed on radiation-related concerns, such as the amount of radiation used or alternatives that do not involve radiation.
The study highlighted a disconnect between public concerns about radiation exposure and the reality of patient preferences, suggesting that anxiety about the procedure and its preparation were more pressing concerns for most patients than radiation risks. This underscores the need for clearer communication and more education about the safety and necessity of imaging exams, particularly those involving radiation.

Interestingly, X-rays were discovered soon after the first chiropractic adjustment in 1895. Wilhelm Roentgen, a German physics professor, was experimenting with cathode ray tubes and discovered that an object across the room began to glow. Much to his surprise, when he placed his hand between the tube and the glowing barium screen, he was able to see the bones of his hand.
